Calibration of a Congestion Load Model for Highway Bridges Using Traffic Microsimulation

چکیده

For shortto medium-length bridges, the governing traffic loading scenario may be congested traffic. This paper presents the calibration of a congested traffic load model using traffic microsimulation. A range of bridge lengths, forms of construction, and load effects is considered. Different driving parameters and traffic composition are also considered. The influence of these parameters on the resulting load effect is determined. For each of these scenarios, a calibrated gap between trucks is determined to replicate the traffic microsimulation results. This calibrated gap can then be used as part of a simpler congestion model, suitable for bridge assessment. Such simpler models can be used to simulate much longer periods than are possible using traffic microsimulation. It is found that the calibrated gaps are either similar to, or are larger than, previous work in the area. Consequently, this approach helps to remove some conservatism from congested traffic load effect estimation, and this may find valuable application in the assessment of existing bridge structures.

A Framework for Traffic Planning and Forecasting using Micro-Simulation Calibrations

This paper presents the application of microsimulation for traffic planning and forecasting, and proposes a new framework to model complex traffic conditions by calibrating and adjusting traffic parameters of a microsimulation model. By using an open source micro-simulator package, TRANSIMS, in this study, animated and numerical results were produced and analysed. The framework of traffic model...

Load Prediction of In-Service Bridges by Using an Unbiased Grey Markov Forecasting Model

Reliable prediction of traffic loads is essential for bridge planning and design. In the study, an improved unbiased Grey Markov forecasting model is applied to predict traffic loads on highway bridges. The comparison between the predicted results and existing practical measurements indicates that high accuracy can be achieved by using the developed model for bridge load prediction. The develop...

Performance Improvement of Expanded Integrated Local Area Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)

In Local Area Networks (LAN) connected together by bridges, flow control and smooth traffic in the network is very important. However, congestion at bridges can cause intensive loss of received frames. In addition, the received frames are thrown away and have to be retransmitted by the source station, which causes more congestion and massive reduction in the overall network throughput. The netw...

A Statistical Approach for Calibrating a Microsimulation Model for Freeways

In this paper the calibration of a traffic microsimulation model based on speed-density relationships is presented. Hypothesis test was applied in the calibration process to measure the closeness between empirical data and simulation outputs and determine whether the difference between (observed and simulated) speeddensity relationships was statistically significant. Statistical regressions bet...

A Network Wide Evaluation of the SCATS Ramp Metering System Using Microsimulation

During the last century, there has been considerable economic growth and development of cities around the world. The growth has led to an expansion of car-ownership and ultimately increased congestion of the road network. Traffic engineers and transport planners have attempted to mitigate the consequences of congestion of motorways and freeways using a number of techniques. One of which has bee...
